The Festival is an initiative of Casa da Ribeira and has the support of the Rouanet law. It has emerged as an effort to promote contemporary visual arts, aiming at expanding connections between art and society within the context of broadening spaces to create and appreciate art on urban beaches. To achieve it, ArtePraia offers nine meeting points on six beaches of the Fortaleza Coast – Praia da Barra do Ceará, Praia do Poço Da Draga, Praia dos Crush, Praia do Mucuripe, Praia do Futuro and Praia da Sabiaguaba – thereby encompassing diverse and multiple singularities of both the locations and the artworks.

ArtePraia is an initiative of Casa da Ribeira, the Ministry of Culture, and the Federal Government. The project is carried out through the Federal Cultural Incentive Law Rouanet (Lei Rouanet). It is sponsored by Grupo Marquise and Ecofor Ambiental.

Program

The Festival will take place on September 15, 16, and 17 (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), in the 3rd weekend of the month, and will coincide with the International Coastal Cleanup Day. Check out our full schedule below:

“Dreamlike Passage:
Dreams Never Fail”

Artist: Matheus Dias Aguiar-M. Dias Preto (CE)

Ilustration: Nicole Ianinni.

"Who said the dream is over?" - This is the question that drives the art intervention "Dreamlike Passage: Dreams Never Fail" by Matheus Dias Aguiar, M. Dias Preto is an artist from Barra do Ceará, Fortaleza.

It is in this place of memories, experiences and daily resistances, both for M. Dias Preto and residents of Barra, that the  art intervention will take place during the 5th edition of ArtePraia.

Among dream flags heading towards the small island, in a blend of colors, this intervention suggests "reminding bathers of their childhood dreams and inviting them to fight for what the hostile life has extinguished."

The construction of subjectivities and the sense of belonging, essential aspects for ArtePraia, enthusiastically align with this proposal because, after all, would not the most beautiful sunset in the city be indeed a place to recognize and revive dreams?

Dreamlike Passage: Dreams Never Fail, by Matheus Dias Aguiar (CE), at Praia da Barra (next to Vila Café), on the 15th, from 09h to 13h; and on the 16th and 17/09, from 14h to 18h.

Apparitions by the Seashore

Artist: Pedra Silva e Rastros de Diógenes

Among biomes, cosmologies, and terrestrial, marine, and human perceptions, the intervention "Apparitions by the Seashore" summons a blend of sensations and temporalities through an immersive, participatory, and cyclical experience.

The proposal comes from the artists "Pedra Silva" (CE) and "Rastros de Diógenes" (PB). It has an itinerant nature, encouraging beachgoers at Barra do Ceará, Poço da Draga, and Praia dos Crush to co-create and interact with the Apparitions.

The audience will have the opportunity to experience memories and stories of “seeds that have arrived here through the waters” and of “deities that are born from wet clay”.

The intervention uses organic and ephemeral materials, which, even when decomposed, become organic matter for planting. It aligns with ArtePraia's values in respect to nature and the environment.

Apparitions by the Seashore, Pedra Silva (CE) and Rastros De Diógenes (PB), at Praia da Barra (the area where the river meets the sea), on 15/09; at Poço da Draga (between Mirante das Pedras and Ponte Metálica), on 16/09; and at Praia dos Crush (in front of the Belchior Cultural Center), on 17/09. Always from 14h to 18h.

“Art for What?
Art for Whom?”

Artist: Eduardo Frota

"Art for What? Art for Whom?” It is the reflection that the artist Eduardo Frota proposes, based on the thinking of Aracy Amaral, in his homonymous artistic intervention, to the public along the Fortaleza coastline for the 5th edition of ArtePraia.

A prominent artist in the field of Visual Arts, Frota was born in the city of Fortaleza and maintains in this proposition an indispensable aspect of his creation, namely, "the logical and ethical dimensions, conditioned by his poetics."

ArtePraia believes that interventions on the urban beach generate a series of reflection points, revealing even the contradictions of the city itself. Thus, in the intervention " Art for What? "Art for Whom?" is where we find the power of this unveiling.

During a journey swayed by the sea, the intervention can be seen from the João Cordeiro Breakwater to Mucuripe Beach.

"Art for what? Art for Whom?, by Eduardo Frota (CE), is a sea-going itinerary from Fish Market (Mercado dos Peixes) to the Espigão da Rui Barbosa, on September 15, 16, and 17, always from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM and from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

“Algareum”

Artist: Susan Moreno

The intervention "Algareum," by the artist Susan Moreno (SP), proposes an interaction between art and science through "an unexpected encounter, outside educational contexts, between humans and algae, opening sensory gateways to symbiotic futures."

Thus, beachgoers will have an opportunity for a deeper appreciation of nature.

ArtePraia believes in the power of presence and engages with what Susan Moreno creates in her work: "a slow, present, and sensory observation through the way the samples are displayed."

Algareum, by Susan Moreno (SP), at Mucuripe Beach (in front of Seara Praia Hotel), on the 15th, from 14h to 18h; and on the 16th and 17/09, from 10 to 17h.

“Planet fireflies”

Artist: Flávio Carvalho e Lula Duffrayer (RJ)

A dive into sustainability to promote plastic reduction in the oceans - that is the proposal of the art intervention "Planet Fireflies" by artists Flávio Carvalho and Lula Duffrayer.

An artwork with visual impact both during the day and at night. It showcases "luxury in the trash" while bringing visibility and income for workers in the selective waste collection.

Flávio and Lula will create an interactive installation with 100,000 plastic residues. "We want to promote reflection on the impact that each of us has on the environment."

The 5th edition of "Art on the Beach" continues to uphold one of its strongest commitments, which is caring for the environment - we believe in the power of the message from the "Planet fireflies."

Planet Fireflies, by Flávio Carvalho (RJ) and Lula Duffrayer (RJ), at Mucuripe Beach (in front of the Gran Marquise Hotel), on 15, 16 and 17/09, from 14h to 18h.

Brazilian Coastal Memory Institute

Artist: Coletivo IBMC (RN)

The IBMC collective intends to incite games through this meeting. It was idealized by the artists Danilo Santos, Marcone Soares, and Maria Sucar in the art intervention “Brazilian Institute of Coastal Memory.”

Between performance and the archive, this action recognizes the power of memory and the subjectivities of individuals as constituents of artistic material.

We believe in the expanded interaction between artists and the audience as the potential for the artistic enjoyment experience, and this is an intervention that will seek connection with people, with their presence.

The Collective will move between Praia do Futuro, Praia dos Crush, and Poço da Draga during the 5th edition of ArtePraia.

Always from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

To inhabit the Wavefolding

Artist: Danielle Fonseca (PA)

In a poetic dialogue between surfing and words, the artist Danielle Fonseca (PA) will invite the beachgoers at Praia do Futuro to experience the sport as a dance, a movement of becoming a child in surrender to the sea, to play, to life.

Thus, for the 5th edition of ArtePraia, Danielle proposes the intervention "To inhabit the Wavefolding," about which she states: "Surfing, like any sport, brings together people from different backgrounds." Beyond the practice of radical sports, surfing awakens a vital energy closely connected to artistic practices. Surfing belongs to philosophy.``

Danielle is a visual artist and writer. Her poetry contains elements of literature, poetry, philosophy, music, and landscape.

To inhabit the Wavefolding, by Daniele Fonseca (PA), at Praia do Futuro (between the Marulho tent and post 1), from 8 am to 12 pm.

ALApraia

Artist: Coletivo ALA (Arte Livre Ambulante)

"ALApraia" proposes an artistic intervention in which the collective ALA (Free Art of Street Vendors), composed of artists Antônio Salgado, Saulo Pico, Dri Santana, and Pierre Fonseca, will set up a structure based on a street vendor's stall.

In a proposal for dialogue and play with the audience at Praia do Futuro, the collective will present elements and devices to encourage the creation of symbolic narratives in the sand, in harmony with the landscape.

The talk, with coconut water, juice, and other cold drinks, summons the realm of playfulness and affection, drawing people closer through art.

AlaPraia, from the collective Free Art of Street Vendors-ALA (MG), at Praia do Futuro (in front of the Chico do Caranguejo tent), from 8 am to 12 pm.

Navegantes

Artist: Marcos Martins (ES)

The "Navigators," proposed by Marcos Martins (ES) as an art intervention, is driven by concerns that connect the sea to the land,  and the boat to the house, proposing a hybrid that has in its essence the two worlds.

Marcos Martins, a visual artist and architect, explores in his artistic research the reflection on the integration of the body into the public space through the transformations and tensions present in the built (or dismantled) landscapes of large cities, engaging in dialogical processes between spatiality and the body.

For the 5th edition of ArtePraia, the artist draws inspiration from the repertoire of the wattle and daub houses, which preceded brick houses in communities, and from the boat, seen as the essence and symbol of strength and courage in the imagination of workers of the sea (and land).

The artwork, which prompts the audience to reflect on the challenging task of ensuring survival on land through the waters, can be experienced at Sabiaguaba Beach.

Navigators, from Marcos Martins (ES), at Sabiaguaba Beach (next to the Sabiaguaba Park Tent), from 6 am to 18 pm.
